Ray

Raymond always loved horses. So he was very quick to respond to a candidate call for people interested in training and working in the thoroughbred racing industry.

At 15 years and 9 months old, there were a few hoops to go through to include Raymond in the program but with some fantastic help from his job network provider, Raymond was ready for a new and exciting journey.

After completing a Certificate II Stable Hand program, Raymond went on to work with a number of trainers across NSW and Queensland. That is until he found the well known trainer, Les Ross at Eagle Farm. In Mr Ross, Raymond found a great mentor who has been able to guide him in all aspects of his career.

Today, Raymond is an Apprentice Jockey who has a number of race wins under his belt. He lives in a fantastic house located not far from the Ross stables. This is lucky as Raymond starts work everyday at 3.00am.

Raymond reminisces about his tough childhood and how all of the jobs he has had and now his apprenticeship have helped build his self esteem and give him control in his life.

For Raymond, the best part of having the job has been his Dad and siblings moving up to Brisbane where they can see each other all of the time and Raymond can help where he needs to.

Raymond’s advice to other’s is:

“Pick what you want to do, if you really want it stick with it, try your hardest, stick your head down and your bum up and go for it, it is the only way”
