Robyn
Robyn was beginning to establish a career for herself with the
Australian Bureau of statistics in 2011, when she was involved in a
terrible car accident. Robyn suffered serious injuries requiring
extensive rehabilitation. Robyn had not worked since the accident and
despite trying to find work she could not secure employment. Robyn lost
her confidence and motivation as a result of continual job rejections.
Robyn
registered with Yarn'n in November 2014. We discussed Robyn's
aspirations and her physical limitations and we worked with her to build
her confidence and identify career options. We also worked closely
with her Disability Employment Service provider Wise Employment.
It
wasn't long before we were able to find an opportunity that would suit
Robyn with one our proactive employers, Guthrie House. The role of
Aboriginal Support Worker was not something Robyn previously considered as
her work history was within the administration field.
But to us at Yarn'n, Robyn met all the requirements due to her transferable skills and knowledge.
We
worked with Robyn over a couple of months to get her job ready,
particularly in understanding how her transferable skills and knowledge
fit the position.
Robyn says since securing her "dream job" she
couldn't be happier. Robyn describes her job as having a positive
impact on her life, one which has given her confidence and improved her
self esteem. She also says the workload is exactly what she can handle,
given her injuries.
Due to her outstanding abilities, Guthrie
House have made a commitment to Robyn's career development by enrolling
her in a Certificate IV in Community Services.
Robyn loves working with residents and enjoys inspiring them with her own story.
Robyn's aim is to give hope and make a difference to residents lives when they finally leave the Guthrie House.
